CITY OF SEWARD Protocols:
DAILY – At noon you’ll hear the City of Seward sounding the 12:00 siren, which will last for only a few seconds. This is a daily lunch-time occurrence, no need to be concerned.
WEDNESDAYs – Every Wednesday, the Kenai Peninsula Borough conducts a weekly test by sounding a siren around 1:00PM, and then announcing that it is only a test.
If you hear a siren being sounded (consistently) not during these time frames, then there is the possibility of a tsunami threat. There will be announcements following the siren(s). If this happens, grab only your necessary items (purse/phone), and travel toward the Seward High School parking lot (2100 Swetman Street). The local police department will also go to ocean front homes and notify individuals to evacuate. There is usually at least a 2 hour window of time after the siren before a tsunami would potentially be a threat. Also tune into the local Seward radio station KIBH - 91.7 FM.
